Manchester Airport Experiences Over 300% Growth in Movements

The Image Above: Manchester Airport's Movement Statistics.

Manchester Airport has experienced growth of over 300% when it comes to airport movements, as the Summer 2022 season ramps up.

The airport has also been the subject of controversy over heavy queues at the airport, and flights being canceled due to issues with handling agents.

So without further ado, let's get into the numbers...

The Numbers

Based on numbers from May 28-June 4, which was last week, the airport handled 559 flights, which is +308.03% more than the same period last year.

This level of growth was similar to 2021 when 137 movements were recorded. This was +426.92% more than 2020 figures, although unsurprising due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For this week, June 4-11, the airport is expected to handle 585 flights, which is +348.18% more than the same period last year.

May 7-14 was a very big week for the airport as they achieved a staggering +910.00% increase, handling 505 movements compared to 2021's measly figure of 50.

So, in all, the airport has had a very good month and is definitely reflective of the high demand the UK travel sector has been experiencing.

Capacity Issues Coming to an End?

To help with the backlog, airlines have been canceling flights out of Manchester to help cope with the demand. This has of course been met with negative PR as passengers have been stranded as a result.

TUI, for example, has canceled a set number of flights all of the way up to the end of June, with the expectation that the rest of the schedule will run as planned.

Other carriers operating across different UK airports have also had to cancel flights due to reasons such as COVID sickness and all the way up to not having enough staff.

It is hopeful that this is just a temporary and chaotic period and that it doesn't extend into the rest of the Summer season.
