Boeing will suspend production of its 737 MAX jetliner escalating the crisis confronting the aerospace giant and raising the prospect of job cuts and furloughs across the global aerospace industry.

The company is expected to halt production in January, according to one of the people.

Boeing has continued to assemble around 40 planes a month at its plant near Seattle since the MAX was grounded globally in March.

Throughout the grounding of the 737 MAX, Boeing has continued to build new airplanes and there are now approximately 400 airplanes in storage.

Boeing stated:

Safely returning the 737 MAX to service is our top priority. We know that the process of approving the 737 MAX's return to service, and of determining appropriate training requirements, must be extraordinarily thorough and robust, to ensure that our regulators, customers, and the flying public have confidence in the 737 MAX updates.

Chinese Airlines such as China Southern Airlines and  Air China still operate the Boeing 737MAX:
